No no you are not wrong. hah Crimson is rather good.
However, it's more expensive and has a longer CD.
IMO, i'd prefer to come online as early as possible if i'm given a chance to play a dual lane core Undying ( 10-12 mins arc + mek ). It's pretty unstoppable if the team know how to play around a good undying and deathball by then.

How is mek a bad item on undying in this situation?

You may think crimson and mek do the same right? they are very alike but there's a key difference aside from crimson only being physical.

Mek is a counter action item
Crimson is a preventive measure

Mek is better against NUKES
Crimson is better against slow stack up of dmg -->which is the case for heavy hitters

So going mek in this particular case is THE WRONG CHOICE, as a support it is viable but you don't waste a core position offlane zombie's farm on a useless fucking item!
