Yes the vanilla wow is nostalgic for sure but not much else going for it.

I actually was intrigued enough to add a month to my old wow account just to try out legion (I didn't buy the xpac though). First there's a shit ton of changes, so I made a level 1 warrior to figure them out at my own pace. And let me say, it's a really polished game experience and a ton of fun. If you have money for heirlooms you can get some amazing gear for your level 1 toon. The initial quests are still kind of dull, but you quickly leave those zones, and once you're 15 you can queue a bunch of dungeons and they all have quests.

Pvp changed sometime along the way too. Your gear doesn't work in pvp now, they give everyone the same stats basically and same level so I queued as a 15 warrior and was level 19 with same gear as everyone else. That's good and bad I guess, really changes the soul of the pvp game where you'd grind your gear and pwn noobs but at same time makes it much more skill based I guess.

Anyway I won't keep playing wow, no desire to raid or anything, but it's interesting to try and I really don't see how anyone can play vanilla any more. It's like watching 4k bluray and then trying to go back to vhs on a standard def tube tv. Maybe there's a super old movie you love that's only on vhs, but it's still super hard to watch.

I do think the issue with mmos is just kind of a been there, done that feel, that wow basically hit the right mix of grinding and gear and mechanics and every game after feels like a clone. For pvp shooters and mobas are more fun, for exploring and messing around open world games like gta5 and skyrim are more fun. There will someday be some mmo that breaks new ground but idk what it's going to be and don't expect it for a while.

^I have no hope about that. hundreds of new mmorpg games came out that are better than what we had before yet, they did not become as popular as the old mmorpg games in 2007. The reason we like old ones are because of nostalgia. New meta is all about competitive games that requires real skill grinding instead of in-game character grinding. Gaming is like actual sports now. You dont continue where you left off. You play for an hour and start over again and repeat that for thousands of times

Not all gaming is like that, indie gaming has come back in a big way, retro style games, rpgs. Rogue likes are huge now compared to a few years old, there's so many clones of good ones. Someone will come out with an mmo that changes everything, that is not gear based or competitive based, that's the terms you're thinking of, but something will exist outside of that. Like look at minecraft. What is the point of that game? Yet people love it. There will be an mmo like that. Or hell just look at pokemon go. It's basically a casual, mobile mmo.
